REDMILE ODDFELLOWS
1838-1920

Membership List

This document came to light after the death of a long time resident of Redmile. Immediately before it was found, another family had found a photograph of the Oddfellows parade outside the 'Windmill Inn' where they met. There are no names on the photograph but it shows a large company of males wearing sashes and carrying a banner. From the following membership list it can be seen that a large percentage of males in the village (over 500) joined at some time. Initially we were unsure of the actual organisation this book belonged to. Clues such as the 'degrees' and colours, allowed Oddfellows to confirm that it was their organisation. We have yet to hear from their archivist.

It is of interest to family historians because of the information on age, occupation, wifes age and residence - several servants at Belvoir Castle are included, and of course it pre-dates the 1841 census and fills in the intervening years for others.

Comparison with the trade directories or census of the time shows there were connections between the employers and men nominated - a good example is the number of tailors who joined - often nominated by a Silverwood, whose family had a large tailors business in the village. The same seems true of other employers. What is surprising is the area covered by 'place of residence', with men from Grantham, Nottingham, Thoroton, Chilwell, Newark etc. There are many places mentioned which would surely be big enough to have their own branch. Perhaps these men were actually working in the village but did not consider it their normal place of residence, some may also have been ex-residents working away from home.

Towards the end of the book, in 1914, three women were transferred from the 'Lady Diana Manners lodge'. These seem to be the only female members.

Notes in the final column include payment in instalments, date 'made' or 'initiated' or 'not accepted'. There are no explanations as to the reason why men were not accepted! There are also dates and 'deceased' added to some entries at a later date, these notes have all been added into the end column.

The initials before the proposer's name are obviously titles/degrees of membership in the Oddfellows organisation. We include them here for the benefit of those who would like to know more - the progression up the hierarchy can be plotted for some members as their titles change over the years.

We are grateful to the owner of this document who has given permission for it to be transcribed and indexed for family historians use as part of the 'Redmile Remembered' village archive. We are always interested in borrowing for copying anything connected with Redmile and its families for the exhibitions which are held on a regular basis and enquiries from family historians are welcome:

Our thanks to Andy Durr for locating and passing to us the following information which further confirms this is a membership list of an Oddfellows group.

Report of the Register of Friendly Societies in England, (London: House of Commons 1867)
The report states the Lodge was of the 'Manchester Unity of Odd Fellow' it gives a name to the Lodge as 'Belvoir' and says it was worth that year £2223 and had 194 members.

Thomas Collins, List of the Lodges Composing The Independent Order Of Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) Friendly Society, (Manchester: 1892)

Redmile Lodge was in the Belvoir Castle District and there were six lodges one at Colsterworth, Denton, two at Grantham, Redmile and Stathern with 926 members. Redmile Lodge that year [1893] had 138 members, admitted 5, excluded 1, 8 died the average age was 47 years. They had £1893 in funds, met at the Old Mill every Wednesday night and the secretary was Ebenezer Carr.

A 1914-1915 Directory tells us that the female lodge, the 'Lady Diana Manners', started in 1912, met in what they describe as 'The Schoolroom' and by 1915 only had one member, two had been excluded, so it looks as if it never really got of the ground. As for the Lodge, it meets in Wind Mill Inn, it has 126 members, £2540 in the bank, two new members, three excluded and three died.
